On 22 February 2022, Kent Wong, Partner and Head of Banking & Capital Markets at VCI Legal LLP, was interviewed by the international newspaper, Al Jazeera, about the Ukraine – Russia crisis.

Prior to the actual attack which followed in the next days, it was surmised that a Russian military incursion into Ukraine would have far-reaching economic ramifications in Asia, where Russian energy is a key driver of economic growth. Many top trading partners of Russia are located in Asia. For Southeast Asia countries. Mr. Wong opined that they might benefit from a diversion of European capital.
“There may be some investment coming from the West into Southeast Asia as a sort of hedge against uncertainty in Eastern Europe”
He also remarked that economic relationships may also need to be re-defined in the fallout of armed conflict.
